Relocating for Virginia Tech
Every year, faculty, staff, and graduate students move to Blacksburg to join Virginia Tech, often from far outside Virginia. Relocating for a new job while buying a home long-distance has its own set of challenges — here's what we've learned helping people through it.
Long-distance moves
If you're moving from out of state, you're often working with a compressed timeline, limited trips to town, and a new job starting soon after you arrive. We try to front-load as much decision-making as possible before you fly or drive in — narrowing neighborhoods, pre-touring listings on video, and lining up a short, focused in-person visit when you're ready to make an offer.
Neighborhoods relative to campus
Commute to campus is one of the first things most Virginia Tech relocations ask about. Some neighborhoods in Blacksburg are walkable or a short bike ride to campus, while others in Blacksburg and nearby Christiansburg trade a longer commute for more space or a lower price point. We'll talk through your department's location on campus, parking realities, and how much of a factor commute time actually is for your day-to-day.
Timing around the academic calendar
Faculty and staff hires often need to close and move in before the fall semester starts, which means the summer months tend to be the busiest and most competitive time to buy in Blacksburg. Graduate students sometimes have more flexibility but still want to be settled before classes begin. We plan the home search backward from your start date so there's a realistic runway for financing, inspections, and closing.
Remote touring
For buyers who can't get to Blacksburg before making a decision, we do live video walkthroughs of homes so you can see a property in real time, ask questions, and get a feel for the neighborhood even from across the country.
